it sucks to be me July 11, 2007

Ok, so Jen officially gets all the luck.
She went to the official opening night of the national tour of Avenue Q, in San Diego. I don’t even know if she knew if it was opening night, but whatever. She recognized one of the co-creators of Avenue Q in the audience, Jeff Marx. She was a bit shy about approaching him, but her friend insisted. So they went up to him after he signed an autograph for someone and told him she was Christmas Eve, a character in the show – an Asian woman with two masters degrees and no job. At first, he thought it was a joke – he didn’t think anyone got two masters degrees! They laughed it up, and started chatting. She also asked him about the Scrubs episode he did a while back, with Stephanie d’Abruzzo. And all of a sudden, he offered them two tickets to the opening night cast party, since he had two friends who didn’t show up and so he had two extra tickets. Jen and her friend was like, “Huh… what?” And he wrote his cell phone on the back of the tickets in case they had problems getting in.
Ok she technically gets all the luck. They called me when they were on their way to the party. I’m sure she will post a review of the first show of the national tour of Avenue Q soon.
Avenue Q is stopping by San Francisco starting on August 7. Click here for more information. Avenue Q was definitely one of the funniest nights I’ve ever had in theater, I don’t think I’ve ever laughed that hard for two hours. I was lucky enough to catch the original Broadway cast (John Tartaglia, Stephanie d’Abruzzo) but unfortunately, Rick Lyon was out that day (he created all the puppets) and apparently he was also a great Trekkie Monster.
It was also the one show where I rushed for seven days straight, including twice on Sat and Wed. About 300 people showed up, and they picked six names out of a bucket. On my last night in NY, the last possible chance I could see it, my name got miraculously picked in the lottery. It was just SO SWEET to watch it after having rushed that many times and get it on my last night. But it is definitely not something I’ll ever do again.
It was worth it for Avenue Q, to be able to see the original Broadway cast.
Christmas Eve, in “It Sucks to be Me”:
“I coming to this country
For opportunities.
Tried to work in
Korean deli
But I am Japanese.
But with hard work
I earn two Master’s degrees
In social work!
And now I am therapist!
But I have no clients
And I have an
Unemployed fiance’!
And we have lots
Of bills to pay!
It suck to be me!“

She got to go to the cast party!!! Wow! It pays to go up and talk to people
But wait, with the reference to the Christmas Eve thing: Jen’s still taking that job in DC soon right, or did she decide to stay out there and look for something in CA?
tonya, i picked california sun over working full-time
so i’ll be here, leisurely taking in abt…while looking for a job. definitely enjoying my time here…
Oh no, you won’t be coming to DC! Well, I can’t say that I blame you — it looks so gorgeous out there! Good luck, and let me know what you end up doing!
