Different people have different tastes, which means that some people are going to swoon for "Giselle" and be put off by "Eden/Eden" and vice versa. I happen to like both the classical and the modern, in both music and dance, and feel that they tend to nurture each other. In fact, that's the best thing about the opera, symphony and ballet companies here. They can do ancient and modern repertory just about equally well, plus everything in between.

As far as taking a newbie to something, it's best to evaluate that person's sophistication in other parts of their lives. I can't stand "La Boheme," for instance, but love "Peter Grimes," so take into account your newbie friend's character before you decide.
