Sascha Radetsky’s Last Performance with ABT August 11, 2008

Filed under: ballet, dance — jolene @ 11:52 pm

Hi everyone – I just flew in from Southern California after an amazing weekend – there are TONS to blog about, from a really great conference talking about the changing media landscape for symphony orchestras, to Les Mis at the Hollywood Bowl, to ABT’s touring performance of Etudes and Tharp’s Rabbit and Rogue. Not to mention another opera and Drowsy Chaperone this week. Anyways, I’ll take it one day at a time and wanted to post a few pictures of Sascha Radetsky’s last performance with ABT on August 10 that I snuck in during curtain calls. I have to apologize profusely for the horrid nature of these pictures – I was pretty far away and he just wouldn’t stop moving. Despite rumors of injury, he pulled out of Etudes but made an amazing appearance as the Rogue in the Tharp piece. The camaraderie shared onstage with him during his curtain calls was really fun to watch, as well as Marcelo Gomes’ friendly interaction with him. It also looked like he was pushed out from behind the curtain for a last curtain call by himself.

Enjoy! More about the performance to come later – the last picture is L to R – Jose Manuel Carreno, Marcelo in all his bronzey glory, Sascha Radetsky as the man of the hour, and the next two I’m not sure of because my program is still in my luggage which is also upstairs – I think it’s Corey Stearns and Maria Riccetto.

Does anyone know what Sascha Radetsky is doing after ABT??

Aw, thanks for the pics! I didn’t know this was Sascha’s last performance with ABT — it’s nice they gave him a little farewell. I’m excited to hear more about what you thought of Rabbit and Rogue. You saw the same cast I did, which I really liked. Most of the critics who reviewed it here saw a different cast, and I think that might have made a difference. Sounds like you had a fabulous visit to LA and I can’t wait to hear more!

Oh, Philip said Sascha was going to a company in the Netherlands. I’m not sure where he heard that from though…

Thanks for the info, Tonya! Is he going to Nederlands Dans Theater, I wonder? That dance company is really attracting a lot of dancers – do I sense a little bit of a trend of American dancers going to Europe to dance? From Noelani (from the Winger) from PNB to Ballet des Monte Carlo, to Sascha…

For Sascha, it was great to see him really grow into the dancer that he is today, from Center Stage to his performance in R&R. He’s really matured in his dancing, and it was thrilling to see him fly.

I promise I’ll blog about it soon!

Hello, I am an ABT fan in Tokyo and I am saddened by the news that Sacha is leaving ABT because he danced so brilliantly at the Japan tour in Le Coisaire and Rabbit and Rogue, Swan Lake.

He will be a first solist(=principal) at Het Dutch National Ballet and is already listed on the roaster.

Thanks Naomi! I’m assuming that you went to see ABT in Japan – how were they? What role did Sascha dance in Swan Lake?

    Hello, jolene,

Indeed I attended almost all of the ABT Japan tour and it was marvelous! Especially, Le Coisaire with Nina, Marcelo, Herman as Ali and Sacsha as Birbando was brilliant. On the Nina Corsaire day, the tickets were sold out and the audience loved Nina and the company. I am saddened by the tragedy happening to Nina’s country.
And Sacsha was great too! I have been visiting the MET season almost every year for about 5 years and Sacsha has grown to such an brilliant, bravura artist during the years with beautiful feet and technique. He danced the role of Benno in Swan Lake and was very good.
Marcelo was great as Conrad with his elegance and great support, and Herman’s Ali made the audience scream with joy with his superb technique such as his leaps and pirouettes.

I’ve only seen Nina dance once, and it was with her Georgia company and not with ABT. I would have loved to have seen her Giselle with ABT; I heard her and Angel Corella as Albrecht was something heavenly. I’m glad she sold out her performance in Japan.

I’m sad that Sasha is leaving! I’ve loved him for a long time. Thanks for the pictures!

    Hi Katrina, you’re welcome!

  9. Laura Says:

Hi there! I am Dutch and have exciting news. Sascha will be dancing the role of Albrecht in our version of Giselle! And I’m going there upcoming wednesday (the 18th) he’ll be aside Lariss Lezhnina as Giselle and Marisa Lopez as Myrtha..! I am so excited, as of now there are no pictures available of this paring. But I will definately report back here when I’ve gone.

Thanks for commenting, Laura! I’m glad he’s getting lead roles that he wasn’t really getting here in the US. I’ll be looking forward to what you’ll write about him, he’s really grown a LOT as a dancer since Center Stage. Be sure to be a lookout for dancer Moises Martin as well – he was one of my favorites when he was here in San Francisco, and I loved it when he danced with his brother, Ruben Martin, here with San Francisco Ballet. His presence is missed.
