Hi J, I too was waiting to be swept up in the Rachmaninoff piano concerto. It was very different from how I usually hear it, which is ok, but unfortunately I didn't find it very convincing. Others will probably disagree, but that's ok. Clearly he's talented and a superstar. I'm eager to see him perform again. Thanks for commenting!

I thought opening with A Night on Bald Mountain was a wise choice, and I, for one, enjoyed the heck out of it. It provided the so called "newbies" with a familiar jumping off point (who hasn't seen Fantasia?) and maybe gave the regulars a chance to appreciate a different rendition of a beloved classic. I too was not very impressed with the second piece. It was nearly as frustrating as watching a star athlete have an average game, not really rising above the rest of the team. I found myself continually waiting for the piano to break through the crowd and strut it's stuff.
