Thoughts on theater in the Bay Area

The Berkeley New Music Project January 7, 2010

A few weeks ago, I had seen this on Reverberate Hills, and so I recognized this group when I ran into them at the ferry building in San Francisco. It was both PR and fundraising rolled into one, as they sang (with remarkable harmony and pitch) Christmas carols in the pre-Christmas season. My date was handed the note explaining their group which I wasn’t able to see, but you can read more on Patrick’s blog in the link above.

Some blurry photos I snapped. Click to enlarge.

How much new music can a dollar buy?

The increase in student fees and other cuts at the UC system in California are appalling, and something has GOT to change.

As on Reverberate Hills, donations can be made to:

I hope between the two of us we can generate some cash for this group.

And I hope you’re still planning to post on The Hard Nut — I’ve been dying to know what you thought of it.

Hi Patrick! I was thrilled when I saw this group. They even had great harmonies as well – a lot going on musically in these overheard Christmas carols.

With graduation looming, things have been so busy that I’ve been only writing about the shows that I’ve been comped to attend. The Hard Nut was amazing. I’ll do a belated writeup about it as soon as I get a chance. I can’t wait to hear what you thought as well. I hope you are well! Will I see you at the opening night gala of the SF Ballet?

Just saw this comment . . . it’s been that kind of week and I completely understand about being swamped! I’m still hoping to do a write-up on the Hard Nut myself. As for the ballet, I don’t have any tickets yet and am trying to decide what to do and see. Chances are I won’t go to the opening night gala because those tend to be really expensive and more about parties afterward, but maybe that’s not true of the ballet the way it is of the opera and the symphony?

Hi Patrick – I’d have to say that I’m a bit oblivious to the social connotations of opening night galas – I barely remember the one SF opera opening night gala I attended, aside from the fact that I was on a date unintended. I love ballet opening night galas because it’s the one night that you can see all the stars in one night, rather than attending many different nights to see your favorites. There are standing room tickets for $25! It might be a good time to dry off from this storm.
